It's no more news that some Cops consistent go to the level of inquiring for citizens phones and have access to them but the real truth is this; it's unlawful for a Police officer to check your phone.
Too many Nigerians have experiences about failures of Cops Authorities avoiding them for irrelevant queries, and then infiltrating their comfort by requiring ongoing through their cell phones. Again and again, individuals keep having at gunpoint to present their phones for a check-up. OfÚcers go through bank information, SMS, social networking communications and all, in breach of security. And until now, Cops regulators have simply sustained like they could not care.
However, Abayomi Shogunle, Officer in Charge of the Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU)has tweeted that the Inspector General of Police has sent out around to all police instructions prohibiting the “illegal look for of cell phones”.
In our viewpoint, if searching citizen’s cell phones are already unlawful, what is the substance of a ban? Shouldn’t the illegality of it just be outlined to the position and file? But we won’t nitpick. We are grateful to see the IGP take a stand for the privileges of individuals to comfort. We can only wish that this will be clearly conveyed to Officers on the roads where the individual offenses take place on a regular foundation. The other question is, will police officers comply? after all, individuals they break other rules with exemption every day.
For quite a long time, Nigerians have requested if it's right for police Officer to check your cell phones during a scheduled stop and look for exercise on the way. Now, the Lagos State Police PRO, Dolapo Badmus has revealed more insight into the issue saying it isn't right. In her words, 'Your telephone is private, it's your private property since individuals do alot of private stuffs on their cell phones so it's off-base. Police ofúcers have no privilege to do that aside from there is a sensible ground to do as such'.
